 #14: BATH AND BEDDING PRODUCTS:

Some textile products for baths include washcloths, bath and hand towels, bathmats, and shower curtains. These products come in various levels of quality, and the material helps determine its performance. The material that towels are made of is important because they should be able to dry and absorb water well. Towels made of cotton can be low grade, rougher and have a shorter lifespan. Better quality cotton towels are combined with synthetic fibers, such as polyester, to perform better. Luxury cotton towels are usually made of organic cotton with bamboo blends and advanced fiber processing. These are eco-friendly materials but are soft, extra absorbent, and light weight. The functional ability of textile bath products depends on fiber length, yarn type, and the construction. They need to dry fast and avoid pile, fading, and stiffening. Design innovation of these products can differ based on dye method for different solid colors, patterns, textures of weaving. They can also go through antimicrobial treatments.

Textile bedding products include sheets, blankets, comforters, duvet covers, pillowcases, and mattress covers. The material quality of bedding products differs based on its fibers, which are often made of polyester or poly-cotton blends of material. However, these fibers create products that are less breathable and can attract pilling and heat. Product made of cotton are good for comfort, breathability, and durability. Some luxury bedding products are made of Egyptian or Supima cotton, bamboo, linen or silk. They are also constructed by multi-ply yarns and high-end finishing for better performance and focuses on sustainability. In terms of function for bedding, people tend to focus on breathability, durability, overall comfort, moisture management to avoid trapping of heat and humidity. The innovaation of bedding design can vary in colors through dye method, pattern through weaving, texture, coordinated bedding sets, and even smart bedding sets with colling fabrics and layered comfort control.

ONE STEP FURTHER:

Textile bath products are focused on the moisture absorption and bed product focus on the softness and breathability. I found myself wondering what fibers most bath and bed textile products were made of, and which are the best. Bath products are most dominantly made of cotton and polyester blends of fibers for cheap, reliable performance products. Most towels are made 90% of cotton because of its absorbing quality. The best material for performance, durability, luxury, and comfort is long staple Egyptian cotton for more absorption, softer hand, and density. Some brands that sell these is the Linen Society and Luxome. Again, for bedding, the most common products are made from cotton. Sometimes polyester, linen and silk are used or blended with cotton to make bedding products, but cotton dominates, especially for bed sheets. The highest quality bedding is made, again, for Egyptian cotton for balance, linen for breathability, and silk for feel. A brand that sells this kind of luxury product are Boll & Branch and Cozy Earth

  1. Hi Grace! Great blog! You summarrized bath textiles such as towels washcloths very well. i like how you showed the pros and cons of each fiber type. I also thought you described different bedding textiles very well. The type of fiber used greatly impacts the comfort of the bedding fabric. I also liked how you described the best materials for each use. Since you mentioned Egyptian cotton a lot, I decided to attach some links below that talk more about Egyptian cotton. Great job!

  2. Hi Grace, I really enjoyed reading your post this week. You provided a well written summary about bath and bedding products. I like that you discussed the most popular type of bath and bedding products fibers due to their properties in your one step further section. This was a great area to research. Since cotton is so prevalent today, I found an awesome scholarly source that talks more about the properties of cotton. I hope you enjoy this resource!
