#13: CARPET INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE

 #13: CARPET INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE

Installation methods:

Wall to Wall Carpet Installation is when the carpet is a continuous roll that covers the entire floor space. The installation process begins by removing all of the furniture off of the floor or space where the carpet is to be installed. Then, ensure that the baseboards are in good condition, as well as the other subfloor elements for easier installation. This usually means removing the old flooring, and vacuuming to remove debris, checking for damage and doing repairs on uneven spots when necessary. When the carpet is installed, tack strips are used and placed around the perimeter of the space to hold the carpet in place. They make sure that the carpet fits snuggly into place and use adhesive to secure it. After it is rolled out, it is cut to the correct dimensions and stretched over the tack strips to prevent wrinkles and ensure a smooth finish. (Can also used glue-down and double glue-down method.

Carpet Tile installation is done with small, square pieces of carpet tile (usually 18-24 inches) which are laid down individually and then installed or glued down. This is great for flexible layouts and easy replacements. Such as with the last method, the subfloor should be prepped and ready for new installation. Once the area is ready, there are different methods of installation for carpet tile which include glue-down, peel-and-stick, and a releasable adhesive. After this, it can be finished with a carpet roller for smooth surface and removing any excess adhesive.

The difference between wall-to-wall installation and carpet tile installation is that wall to wall carpet install is more complex, while carpet tile is an easiest installation removal process. Carpet tile can even be a home DIY project, especially because of its lower costs, whereas wall to wall installation is often done by professionals. The large rolls compared to the multiple squares shows that one method is seamless and the other is not and therefore the patterns are more continuous in wall to wall and strategically placed and repeated with tiles layouts.

Area Rugs are added to the surface of a floor covering. This can be done with the help of a rug pad with a textured surface to prevent sliding and for grip. Before it is placed, the floor is prepped and vacuuming free of debris and then once placed, it is cut to size and any pockets of air are removed. Additional tape and grippers can be added to further prevent slipping and sliding.

Primary methods of carpet tile layouts: Monolithic, Quarter-Turn, Ashlar, etc..

Maintenance Methods

Carpet maintenance is extremely important because it should be done periodically and in the correct way to ensure long lifespan of the flooring. Additionally, it prevents mold, mildew, dust, dirt, and allergens, improves indoor air quality, and enhances the overall appearance of a room. This is done through routine vacuuming, usually 1-2 times per week (often more times with high traffic spaces) to prevent buildup of dirt, and occasional spot cleaning to avoid stain and spreading of dirt and spills. Carpet should also be deep cleaned every 12-18 months with steam or hot water extraction methods on-site. Carpet tiles can be removed easily. Area rugs can be taken out and deep cleaned or washed professionally depending on the type and then returned to the space. Area rugs have a much lower maintenance level than carpet and easy repair.

ONE STEP FURTHER:

I did my one step further about what the best application for each one was best used for in application. For example, wall-to-wall carpet is best for comfort and bedrooms for a seamless look. This continuous expanse of carpet offers luxury. Carpet tiles are often seen in commercial spaces for its easy removal, repair, cost effectiveness, and ease of installation. You will see carpet tiles in offices, basements, and DIY projects, apart from commercial buildings. Area rugs add character and even a pop of color in aesthetic. They are the best option for flexibility and making a room feel "softer". It is easy to clean and to change when remodeling a space.
