Reflection

Over the course of this class, I learned so much about textiles! I learned a lot about fibers and natural

and synthetic materials. I think it is so interesting to learn the differences between handmade and

man-made fibers, and the uses and applications that they can have.

It was great to learn more about lead and lead green associate and green guard and well. It is so important

that we as designers lean on sustainable materials so that we can make sure our designs are eco-friendly

and beneficial for the environment, and the people that are occupying the buildings we design. Product

selection criteria was another great topic we learned about across the course of this class. It is important

to understand the client’s knees and to do everything you can as a designer to inform them of the options

and find them the best product you can.

After this, I learned so much about weaving and knitting, the different ways that you can dye yarn, and

the different patterns and prints that you can see in textiles. There are so many different applications for

textiles as well whether it is wall coverings, upholstery curtains, drapery, etc..Understanding, fiber and materials is so important for textiles too. I learned so much about linen and silk,

bamboo and cotton. Then I was able to understand the fiber testing methods and the properties of textiles

that we as designer should understand and apply. Then we can understand more about the different fibers

and synthetic fibers that we have in the industry and production. Some of these are technical nylon,

polyester, poly propylene, flax, silk, etc.

Along with this, it’s important to understand the effects of textiles and the different ratings and codes that

they can align with. Designers should look at their flammability, wet and dry crocking, double rubs and

durability, and overall standards.

Carpet is a textile material. That is super interesting to understand. This course taught me a lot about the

different fibers that can create a carpet. I also learned about carpet construction, and the different backing

that can go along with carpet paddings, and the different faces and pile loops and heights. There are so

many different ways of installation to whether there is broadloom or carpet tile. And they can be glued

and arranged in different ways. They even have methods of carpet, recycling and different carpet cushions

that you can consider maintenance of textiles and textile products is super important because the better

you maintain it the longer it will last. As a designer, you should give good and detailed instructions for

a product to ensure that the client is taking care of it in the correct way. Most textile products, such as

carpet, is best cleaned through hot water extraction. For drapery, it is best to vacuum periodically.

Over this course, it was so interesting to learn about the fibers and textiles and products that can come
from natural materials and man-made material materials. Even in my life today, I noticed walking around
and feeling different blankets and towels around my dorm and taking note of stitching or embroidery and
the pile height and wondering what fiber it has been made from. I think that the textbook was so
interesting to learn about the different applications and products, the review questions helped me learn
all the different terms and methods, and the projects helped me apply that knowledge!

  1. Hi Grace! This is a very thorough summary. I'm glad you learned so much in this class. I also agree that thinking about carpet as a textile material was a bit wierd in the beginning. I never realized it before this class. I also didn't realize how much there was to learn about carpet, such as its application and material. I also think the textbook described the information in this class very well. Great job!
